Also known as: Blood Ammonia, Blood NH3, NH3, NH4.
Ammonia is a compound that is produced by intestinal bacteria and by cells in the body during the digestion of protein. It is a waste product normally transported to the liver, where it is converted into urea and glutamine. This test is used to detect elevated levels of ammonia in the blood and to help evaluate changes in consciousness, severe liver disease, and certain genetic urea cycle disorders; to support the diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy and Reye’s syndrome.
