Conditions associated with marked fecal leukocytes, mucus and blood include diffuse antibiotic associated colitis, ulcerative colitis, shigellosis, Campylobacter, salmonellosis, and Yersinia infection. Salmonella typhi can evoke a monocyte response. Conditions associated with modest numbers of fecal leukocytes include early shigellosis involving small bowel, amebiasis antibiotic associated colitis. Conditions associated with an absence of fecal leukocytes include giardiasis, toxigenic bacterial infection, and viral infections.
