What is the purpose of this test?

Order this Anti-dsDNA (Double-Stranded) Antibodies Blood Test that detects and measures anti-dsDNA antibodies in the blood to diagnose and monitor systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly targets the body’s cells and tissues. An ANA test is usually conducted first to assess if an individual has an autoimmune disorder. However, if an individual has a positive ANA, an anti-dsDNA test may be ordered to help distinguish lupus from other autoimmune disorders with similar signs and symptoms.

The Anti-dsDNA Antibodies Blood Test may also monitor disease activity in lupus patients. Those with lupus often have recurring flare-ups in which symptoms worsen and then subside. An increased anti-dsDNA level may be detected before and during these flare-ups. Specifically, this test may be used to monitor lupus nephritis, a severe complication of lupus that can cause kidney damage and inflammation. This complication can lead to protein in the urine, high blood pressure, and kidney failure.

When should I order an Anti-dsDNA (Double-Stranded) Antibodies Blood Test?

Individuals may order this test if they have experienced symptoms related to lupus. Common signs and symptoms of lupus include the following:

  • Muscle pain
  • Arthritis-like pain in joints
  • Malar rash
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Skin sensitivity to light
  • Hair and weight loss
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
