Details

The Aluminum, Plasma or Serum Test, or Aluminum Toxicity Test, measures the amount of aluminum present in the blood, and is useful in the diagnosis and ongoing evaluation of aluminum poisoning.

Aluminum is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon) and the most common metal present in the earth’s crust. Aluminum is found in water, air, soil and food, so environmental exposure is unavoidable, but usually not harmful. Exposure to high levels, however, can lead to aluminum toxicity (poisoning), resulting in serious health effects. Individuals at risk for high exposure include those who live or work near an environment with increased aluminum levels, such as aluminum mines or processing facilities, certain kinds of hazardous waste sites, and locations where levels are naturally high. Food and beverages, antacids, antiperspirants and vaccines can also contain aluminum, potentially increasing exposure. Individuals at particular risk for aluminum toxicity include those with industrial exposure; decreased kidney function; chronic renal failure who are on dialysis; patients on parenteral fluids, particularly nutrition; and burn patients receiving treatment through administration of intravenous albumin, particularly with coexisting renal failure.

Symptoms of aluminum toxicity include confusion; muscle weakness; seizures; speech problems such as stuttering; bone pain, deformities or fractures; and slow growth in children. Aluminum toxicity can lead to diseases or disorders of the bone, brain, lung and nervous system, as well as anemia and impaired iron absorption.

The Aluminum, Plasma or Serum Test is also known as Al, Plasma and Al, Serum. Fasting is not required for this blood test, and results will be delivered within one to two days.
