C4 is a component of the complement system, a part of the body’s innate immune system. The Complement C4 Serum Test, or simply C4 Blood Test, is ordered to detect and diagnose a hereditary or acquired deficiency of C4. C4 is one of the most frequently measured complement proteins.

Decreased C4 levels are associated with and may be an indicator of disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys’ filters), serum sickness (a reaction to injected foreign proteins or serum), cryoglobulinemia (abnormal proteins in the blood that thicken in cold temperatures), hereditary angioedema (swelling of the face, airway, intestinal tract and/or limbs), Henoch-Schönlein purpura (inflammation and bleeding of the small blood vessels), chronic active hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and increased incidence of pus-producing bacterial infections.

Levels may be increased and may be an indicator of disease activity in patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (premature destruction of red blood cells).

The C4 Blood Test is also known as C4, C4 (β1E Globulin), C4 Complement, and Fourth Complement Component. Fasting is not required prior to the test, and results will be available within two to three days. A doctor’s order and insurance are not necessary to purchase this test.

For more information about the complement system, see details on the CH50 Blood Test page. Walk-In Lab also offers a C1 Inhibitor Blood Test, C1q Blood Test and C2 Blood Test.
