The creatine kinase total serum is used to diagnose myocardial infarction (MI). Three fractions normally may be found, each an isoenzyme: MM is found in normal serum. MB is the myocardial fraction associated with MI and occurs in certain other states. MB can be used in estimation of infarct size.

Details

A CPK Isoenzymes Test or Creatine Kinase (CK) Isoenzymes Test helps detect and pinpoint the location of muscle damage.

The CPK Isoenzymes Test is also known as Creatine Kinase Isoenzymes, CK Isoenzymes, Creatine Phosphokinase Isoenzymes, and CK Fractionation. No fasting is required for this blood test, and results will be delivered within 1-2 days. This test does not require a doctor’s order or insurance.

The CPK Isoenzymes Test is often ordered as a follow-up to a CPK Test if elevated levels of creatine kinase (CK) are detected. There are three creatine kinase isoenzymes in the body: CK-MB (found mostly in the heart), CK-MM (found in skeletal muscles and the heart), and CK-BB (found mostly in the brain). The CPK Isoenzymes Test measures total CK levels, plus percentage of each isoenzyme to help pinpoint the location of muscle damage. High CK-MB levels may indicate a myocardial infarction (heart attack) and can be used to estimate infarct size. Inflammation of the heart, muscular dystrophy and other heart-related conditions can also cause CK-MB to rise. CK-MM levels can rise due to muscle damage following crush injuries, seizures, recent surgery, and strenuous exercise, as well as inflammation or breakdown of muscle tissue and other conditions, including muscular dystrophy. Elevated CK-BB levels may indicate brain injury, stroke, seizures, brain cancer, and other conditions.
