Why It Is Used
The GlycoMark blood test is primarily used to assist in diabetes management.

How It Works
The blood test is used to assess glycemic control and fluctuations over a 1 to 2 week period.  The GlycoMark blood test is a relatively new laboratory test and is used in conjunction with A1c, which looks at glycemic control over a 2 to 3 month period.  The test is very useful in determining if an individual in experiencing extreme spikes in blood glucose levels after meals.  Other glucose tests are very good at measuring blood glucose levels at the time of testing, but do not give the fuller picture of glucose fluctuations that the GlycoMark test offers.

The test works by measuring the level of 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) in the blood.  1,5-AG is a blood sugar that, like other blood sugars such as glucose, is absorbed by the kidneys.  The kidneys only need a certain amount of blood sugar and so when there glucose blood levels spike above 180 mg/dL, the 1,5-AG blood sugars are passed out of the body as waste and their presence in the blood is decreased.   It takes approximately two weeks for the 1,5-AG levels to get back to normal.  A lower level of 1,5-AG in the blood indicates poorer glycemic control.

Results
Test results are interpreted by looking at the levels of 1,5-AG found in the blood.  1,5-AG is measured in microgram per milliliter (µg/mL).  Glucose is measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).  Normal results vary based on what test is being used.  The following results are representative numbers based on the GlycoMark blood test.

  • GlycoMark > 12 µg/mL represents an approximate 2 week glucose maximum of < 180 mg/dL
  • GlycoMark 10 µg/mL represents an approximate 2 week glucose maximum of 185 mg/dL
  • GlycoMark 8 µg/mL represents an approximate 2 week glucose maximum of 190 mg/dL
  • GlycoMark 6 µg/mL represents an approximate 2 week glucose maximum of 200 mg/dL
  • GlycoMark 4 µg/mL represents an approximate 2 week glucose maximum of 225 mg/dL
  • GlycoMark < 2 µg/mL represents an approximate 2 week glucose maximum of > 290 mg/dL
