This test measures Ammonia levels in the blood.  Ammonia is a waste product of the digestion of protein.
High blood ammonia levels may indicate any of the following:
  • severe liver dysfunction
  • severe hepatitis
  • Heart failure
  • Leukemia
  • Liver failure
  • Genetic diseases of the urea cycle
  • Severe muscle exertion
  • urinary tract infection with distention and stasis
  • Low blood potassium level
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding, usually in the upper GI tract
  • High body temperature (hyperthermia)
  • Reye's syndrome
  • drug hepatotoxicity
Ammonia levels can also be raised due to a diet high in protein.
A low level of ammonia could be caused by very high blood pressure that comes on quickly and suddenly.
Note:  You should not smoke prior to blood collection.
