Description

This blood test is also known as E1 and does not require fasting in preparation. Results are delivered within four to six days of taking the test. An estrone serum test is a cost-effective, confidential and convenient alternative for those without a doctor's order or health insurance.

Estrone is the least abundant of the three forms of estrogen and is relevant to health and disease because it is considered the stronger acting estrogen.  It is the main form of estrogen in postmenopausal women.  If you are supplementing with estrone, it is important to take it approximately 2 hours prior to having your blood drawn. Any type of contraceptives that contain hormones will invalidate hormone results.

Women order the estrone serum test to measure and monitor estrogen levels and help explain abnormal menstrual cycles, infertility symptoms of menopause, abnormal or heavy bleeding, infertility, or any other hormonal alterations. This blood test is also used to check for fetal-placental status during early stages of pregnancy and to evaluate feminization (the presence of female-like characteristics in males). An E1 blood test can help evaluate postmenopausal vaginal bleeding due to peripheral conversion of androgenic steroids. Additionally, increased estrone levels may be associated with increased levels of circulating androgens and their subsequent peripheral conversion.

Estrone levels may be elevated in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome and endometriosis. Tests may be used to aid in the diagnosis of an ovarian tumor, Turner syndrome, and hypopituitarism.
