Preparation No fasting required. Patient should be on a normal diet and maintain a stable weight for a week prior to testing. Anyᅠmedications should be discontinued for three to four weeks if possible. Check with physician before stopping any medications. Test should not be performed until three months after a myocardial infarction or similar traumatic episode, such as severe infection or inflammation.
Test Results 1-2 days. May take longer based on weather, holiday or lab delays.

HDL-C may also be monitored on a regular basis if previous test results have shown an increased risk for heart disease, if an individual has had a heart attack, or if someone is undergoing treatment for high cholesterol.

HDL-C may be ordered as a follow-up test to a high result on a cholesterol screening test.
