A magnesium test is used to evaluate the amount of magnesium in the urine.  Abnormal magnesium concentrations are most commonly seen in conditions or diseases that trigger kidney impairment or excessive excretion of magnesium by the kidneys or that cause impaired absorption in the intestines. Magnesium levels can be tested as part of an assessment of the severity of renal issues and/or of uncontrolled diabetes and can assist in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders.

Magnesium concentrations can be measured frequently to monitor the response to oral or intravenous (IV) magnesium supplements and can be ordered, along with calcium and phosphorus testing, to monitor calcium supplementation.
