The blood test for amylase is used to diagnose or monitor a pancreatic problem such as pancreatitis. Amylase is one of several enzymes produced by the pancreas that help digest proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The pancreatic duct secretes it into the duodenum and helps break down dietary carbohydrates. Amylase is also produced by other organs, especially the salivary glands. Amylase can usually be found in small amounts of blood and urine. When pancreatic cells are injured (such as pancreatitis) or when the pancreatic duct is blocked (by a gallstone or rarely by a pancreatic tumor), increased amounts of amylase are found in the bloodstream, increasing concentrations of blood and urine, which are the pathway for amylase excretion from the blood.

This test is usually ordered if you have pancreatic disorder symptoms that include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Fever

When amylase levels are elevated, it may indicate:

  • A blockage in the pancreas
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Acute pancreatitis

When amylase levels are lower than normal, it may indicate:

  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Liver disease
  • Chronic pancreatitis
