The antinuclear antibodies (ANA) test is performed to help diagnose if you have an autoimmune disease.  Antinuclear antibodies are found in people whose immune system is unable to differentiate between its healthy cells and cells of viruses and bacteria.  When this happens, your body produces proteins that attack your healthy cells.  These proteins are also known as antibodies.

When the proteins attack cells in the body, they cause redness and swelling known as inflammation.  Antinuclear antibodies are found in many autoimmune diseases including:

  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Scleroderma

Symptoms of autoimmune diseases that may be caused by antinuclear antibodies include:

  • weight loss
  • fever
  • skin rash
  • joint pain
  • tiredness
