The C-Peptide Serum looks at how well the body produces insulin. It is helpful in diagnosing blood sugar disorders. The body needs insulin to move sugar through the blood to energize your cells. The pancreas produces equal parts of insulin and the protein C-Peptide. Testing the level of C-Peptide can show whether a person has type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is also used to see how well treatment for diabetes is working.

A C-Peptide test may be needed if a person has symptoms of low blood sugar such as:

  • sweating
  • blurred vision
  • rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • confusion
  • abnormal hunger
  • fainting

A low level of C-peptide can indicate that the body is not making enough insulin and can be a sign of the following:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Addison's disease
  • Diabetes treatment is not working well

A high level of C-peptide can indicate that the body is making too much insulin and can be a sign of the following :

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Insulin resistance, a condition in which the body doesn't respond the right way to insulin. It causes the authority to make too much insulin, raising your blood sugar to very high levels.
  • A tumor of the pancreas
  • Cushing's syndrome, a disorder in which your body makes too much of a hormone called cortisol.
