Many people believe that CoQ10 is a vitamin because it is essential for our bodies to function. It is so important for our cells that our liver produces it. CoQ10 is found in virtually every cell in our bodies and plays a vital role in energy production. This energy is necessary to send messages to our brains between the neurons, move our muscles and keep our hearts pumping. CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant that protects our cells against damage that can cause mutations or cancer. Sufficient CoQ10 levels are required to keep our body healthy and functioning normally.

The body can naturally rebuild the CoQ10 level with some ingested foods. It can be found in organ meats such as animal liver and heart at the highest concentrations. You can also find CoQ10 in beef, pork, chicken and fatty fish like tuna. Beef has the highest quantities.

CoQ10 production decreases as you age, so older people appear to be deficient in this compound. Other causes of CoQ10 deficiency include nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin B6 deficiency, genetic defects in the synthesis or use of CoQ10, increased tissue requirements due to disease, mitochondrial diseases, aging oxidative stress and side effects of statin treatments.
