This test will check for conditions that will cause the body to produce particular types of antibodies called cold agglutinins.  Cold agglutinins are generally produced by the immune system when there is a suspected infection.  This will cause the red blood cells to cluster together at low temperatures. Higher than normal levels usually aren't cause for concern.  Skin of the hands and feet could become pale and numb, but those symptoms will dissipate when the skin warms up. Occasionally, high levels of cold agglutinins can damage red blood cells in the body.  This will cause a condition known as autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

Common symptoms of hemolytic anemia:

  • paleness of skin
  • fatigue
  • fever
  • confusion
  • lightheadedness and dizziness
  • weakness or inability to do physical activity
