The methadone blood test is used for monitoring purposes. Methadone is prescribed in amounts that are reasonable in comparison to withdrawal symptoms. Doses are lowered until the opiate dependency is eliminated.

Methadone is a narcotic, painkilling drug, which has a comparable potency to morphine. It has been used for many years in the treatment of opioid addiction. Methadone is commonly prescribed as an opioid substitute in methadone maintenance programs to prevent the onset of withdrawals.  The proper use of this drug is appropriate for some individuals in recovery.
