New Years Safety Tips

New Years safety tips are important to remember and follow as you celebrate this holiday. Many people like to celebrate and throw parties to bring in the new year without thinking of any consequences. The smallest party or outing can end up with trouble, so it is good to think ahead about the safety of yourself and your loved ones.

You should have fun as you close this year and bring in the New Year. The fun can quickly end if someone becomes injured, sick, or if any fights break out. But do not let this stop you from celebrating altogether. Simply set a few ground rules and come up with a plan to make sure everyone has fun and remains safe.

Here are a few New Years safety tips that everyone should keep in mind as they celebrate the start of our new year!

1. If you are throwing a party, set the rules beforehand. The rules will depend on you and your household.

2. Set a limit to how much alcohol is allowed, if any. If there will be children present, then you should set a limit to little to no alcohol.

3. Be sure everyone who is driving has a designated driver. If they do not have one, there are three choices:

A. Ask if anyone can take he or she home.

B. Allow them to spend the night.

C. Call them a taxi. There are many taxi services that offer free transportation on New Years Eve.

4. Do not be afraid to take the car keys of anyone who is too intoxicated. But this is why it is best to set a limit on how much alcohol is allowed on your property.

5. If you are using New Years decorations, be sure to keep fire safety in mind. Do not plug in too many items into one outlet and be sure to keep paper and water away from all cords and electrical products.

6. If you are going out with a group of people to a crowded area to celebrate, make a list of everyone who will be attending. Do not be afraid to “call role” if you do not think everyone is present and accounted for.

7. Some New Years Eve events, especially a fireworks show, can become pretty crowded. So be sure to keep everyone together, especially children. If you have to, pick your child up or hold his or her hand. Even if they protest, do this anyways. It is a crowded area at night, and you want to keep everyone safe.

8. If you are going out to any events, be careful crossing all streets. Remember to check all directions for cars and only cross when it is safe to do so. You never know when something could happen, especially on a night like this.

9. Do not wander into any unfamiliar areas and neighborhoods, and do not cut down any alleys or dark streets. You are going to be out pretty late, and there is a chance you are bringing your children along. Stay in familiar and lighted areas. If the event is too far away or does not seem like it is in a safe location, then you may want to consider attending a different one. There are various business and locations that are offering New Years Eve events. You may find one close to home or in a familiar area. Check for directions and parking before attending an event.

10. Bring the necessary safety items in your purse or bag. This includes a charged cell phone and change for a phone booth, bandages, and a flash light.

Now there is a chance that some people may look at a few of these New Years safety tips and think they are silly or unimportant. But it is just the opposite. You never know what the next moment may bring. Especially on a night where many people will be drinking and partying. Anyone can become too intoxicated, decorations can start a fire, or someone can become lost at a crowded event. Believe it or not, these events do sadly occur. This is why everyone should do what they can to prevent them from happening. As you keep everyone’s safety in mind and prevent stress or tragedy, everyone can celebrate the new year safely. You can still have fun and keep everyone safe!

Stay safe, have fun, and remember to keep these New Years safety tips in mind! Happy New Year!
