Biomarker: K084-IgE Sunflower Seed

Overview

K084-IgE Sunflower Seed measures serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies specific to sunflower seed allergens. IgE is involved in immediate-type allergic reactions, including symptoms such as hives, gastrointestinal symptoms, wheezing, and anaphylaxis. A detectable result indicates sensitization, but it does not by itself establish a clinically relevant sunflower seed allergy or predict reaction severity. The test is clinically useful when interpreted with the exposure history, symptoms, physical examination, and, when necessary, a medically supervised oral food challenge.

Clinical Use Cases

  • Evaluating suspected IgE-mediated allergy to sunflower seed after compatible symptoms.
  • Identifying sunflower seed sensitization when skin-prick testing is unsuitable or cannot be performed.
  • Supporting evaluation of possible reactions to foods, occupational exposures, or inhaled sunflower seed material.
  • Helping guide an allergist’s decision about further evaluation, including a supervised oral food challenge.
  • Research characterization of sunflower seed sensitization and clinical allergy.

Specimen Types

  • Venous blood, usually submitted as serum.
  • Plasma may be accepted by some laboratory platforms, but specimen requirements are assay-specific.
  • Skin-prick or prick-to-prick testing uses a separate skin specimen and is not the K084 serum IgE measurement.

Measurement Methods

  • In-vitro allergen-specific IgE immunoassay using sunflower seed extract.
  • Fluorescence enzyme immunoassay or other automated solid-phase immunoassays, depending on the laboratory platform.
  • Results are commonly reported quantitatively in kUA/L or IU/mL and may also be categorized into analytical classes.
  • Component-resolved testing for individual sunflower seed allergen proteins is a specialized approach and is not equivalent to the routine K084 extract-based test.
  • Skin-prick testing and medically supervised oral food challenge may be used as complementary clinical assessments, but they do not measure serum K084-IgE.

Test Preparation and Influencing Factors

  • Fasting is generally not required for serum-specific IgE testing, unless other tests collected at the same time require fasting.
  • Antihistamines generally do not alter the serum IgE concentration, although they can interfere with skin-prick test results.
  • A positive result indicates sensitization and must be interpreted with the clinical history; it does not confirm allergy by itself.
  • The measured concentration does not reliably predict the severity of a future reaction.
  • Recent exposure or avoidance of sunflower seed does not reliably determine whether serum-specific IgE will be detectable.
  • Total IgE concentration, age, atopic conditions, assay characteristics, and the allergen extract used may influence interpretation.
  • Results may vary between laboratory methods and should be interpreted using the reporting laboratory’s reference ranges.
  • A negative or low result does not absolutely exclude clinical allergy; suspected cases may require specialist assessment and, when appropriate, a supervised oral food challenge.
  • Oral food challenges must be performed by qualified clinicians in a medically equipped setting and should not be attempted at home.
