What is the purpose of this test?

Order this Antiproteinase 3 (PR3) Antibodies Blood Test, which detects antibodies to proteinase 3 to help screen for Wegener's granulomatosis. ANCA exams are basic tests used in immunological labs to detect a group of antibodies that target cytoplasm antigens in certain white blood cells. The tests are crucial in identifying acute vasculitis affecting small vessels, causing severe pulmonary issues or kidney failure. Additionally, they are useful in detecting non-vasculitis clinical conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases.

The primary antigens targeted in ANCA-associated vasculitis are proteinase 3 and myeloperoxidase. When antibodies are produced against proteinase 3, they are known as c-ANCA fluorescent subtype or cytoplasmic antibodies. Proteinase 3, also known as Wegener's autoantigen, is a neutral serine proteinase. The PR3 Antibodies test can identify the presence of antibodies against PR3, which serves as a precise indicator for diagnosing Wegener's granulomatosis.

When should I order a PR3 Antibodies Blood Test?

Individuals may order this test if they have experienced symptoms related to Wegener's granulomatosis. Common signs or symptoms of this condition include:

  • Red, itchy eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Problems with sight (blurry vision, loss of vision)
  • Hearing loss
  • Runny nose or other upper respiratory symptoms that do not go away
  • Skin rashes or granulomas
  • Chronic cough or difficulty breathing
  • Traces of protein in the urine
