Bartonella is a family of bacteria that can cause a number of diseases in humans. Bartonella henselae is an infection commonly known as cat-scratch disease that is caused by exposure to a cat bite or scratch or fleas biting a person. Bartonella quintana infection is commonly known as trench fever and is commonly transmitted by lice.

What are the symptoms of Bartonella infection?

Bartonella infections can cause a variety of symptoms that may begin around 5-14 days after infection. Symptoms may include fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, brain fog, poor appetite, swollen lymph nodes, back and leg pain, and rash.

Who should get tested?

This test may be helpful if you:

  • Have signs or symptoms of a possible Bartonella infection
  • Have spoken with your healthcare provider and have decided screening is right for you

What will my test results tell me?

A Bartonella PCR test can differentiate between Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana infections. A negative PCR test may not exclude the diagnosis of the disease. A positive test result may be used with other testing to establish a diagnosis for disease. Be sure to share your results with your healthcare provider so they can help you determine the next steps in your care.

Are there any risks involved in getting this test?

There is no risk involved in getting this test. You will be asked to give a blood sample at the lab.
