Description

Order a broccoli allergy IgE blood test to detect an allergy to broccoli. This test measures the amount of allergen-specific antibodies in a blood sample. Although broccoli is not a favorite vegetable of many children, it is a favorite of some adults. Broccoli may be a part of a healthy lifestyle or a delightful indulgence when combined with cheese or tossed in a fresh salad.

Broccoli is high in vitamin A and C, as well as riboflavin, iron, and calcium, and is exceptionally high in vitamin K. The delicate stem and unopened flower buds of the broccoli plant are the edible parts. Broccoli must be harvested before the buds swell and blossom into flowers. There are several varieties of broccoli, including white, purple, deep emerald green, and yellow heads.

The symptoms of a broccoli allergy usually indicate that an individual is allergic to salicylates, a natural chemical found in plants such as broccoli. If an individual is allergic to broccoli, it may be necessary to avoid foods that contain salicylates, including:

  • Avocadoes
  • Coffee
  • Apples
  • Nuts
  • Zucchini
  • Strawberries
  • Bell peppers
  • Tea
  • Blueberries
  • Raisins
  • Cucumbers
  • Okra
  • Ginger

An allergy to broccoli triggers a reaction in an individual's immune system. The body views certain substances as toxic and produces IgE antibodies to these contaminants. These antibodies cause histamine to be released, which will cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Allergy symptoms vary from one individual to the next ranging from mild to severe reactions, which can be experienced within minutes to hours after exposure. Common symptoms of a broccoli allergy may include one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Itching
  • Mouth tingling
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Lip or face swelling
  • Hives or skin rash
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can occur in some individuals. This is potentially fatal and may include symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Throat tightening
  • Low blood pressure
  • Swelling
