Pre-test preparation

Fasting is not required before specimen collection when cholesterol is ordered as part of this lipid panel.

If you have received N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) to treat an acetaminophen overdose, wait at least 12 hours after completing the initial loading dose before having your blood drawn. NAC may interfere with cholesterol testing and could cause falsely low cholesterol results.
