Casein Allergy Blood Test, IgE
The Casein Allergy Test is qualitative allergen specific IgE blood test to determine if you are suffering from a hypersensitivity to Casein, the main protein in milk.
Description
Casein is a milk protein found in cow's milk products and may be problematic if you are allergic to casein- milk protein. This condition is often confused with intolerance of lactose because they share some symptoms and both are caused by milk consumption. Apart from gastrointestinal discomfort, allergy to casein can be life-threatening in severe cases, so it is important to distinguish whether you have a true allergy to casein or lactose intolerance.
Casein allergy occurs when the immune system of your body mistakenly believes that the protein is harmful and inappropriately produces allergic (IgE) protective antibodies. The interaction of these antibodies with the specific protein triggers the release of body chemicals such as histamine, which can cause symptoms including:
- Swelling of the:
- lips
- mouth
- tongue
- face
- throat
- Skin reactions such as:
- hives
- a rash,
- red, or itchy skin
- Nasal congestion, itchy eyes, wheezing, sneezing, runny nose, or coughing
