What is the purpose of this test?

Order this CD4:CD8 Ratio Blood Test Profile, which assesses the strength of an individual's immune system against infections and diseases such as HIV and certain blood cancers. CD4 cells are white blood cells called lymphocytes targeted by HIV. The CD4:CD8 Ratio Profile measures these and other lymphocytes to gauge the status of a person's immune system.

This profile is also helpful in monitoring disease progression in people diagnosed with HIV. HIV targets the immune system making individuals more susceptible to infections and other diseases. Over time, HIV may develop into AIDS. Typically, this test will be ordered routinely to help monitor how much damage the virus has on the immune system or how well a person reacts to treatment.

This test is most often done to assess HIV infection status, but it also helps in screening for and monitoring other diseases, such as:

  • Infectious mononucleosis
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Hodgkin disease (lymphoma)
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • DiGeorge syndrome
  • Organ transplantation
  • Major bacterial infection
  • Viral infection
  • Some types of blood cancer

When should I order a CD4: CD8 Ratio Blood Test Profile?

Individuals may order this test if they have experienced symptoms related to HIV. Common signs or symptoms related to HIV include:

  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Sore throat
  • Rash
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
