What is the purpose of this test?

Order this Coconut Allergy IgE Blood Test, which measures IgE antibody levels in the blood to screen for an allergy to coconuts. Coconuts, belonging to the Aracaceae family, are a type of palm tree plant that can grow up to 72 feet and are used for cooking, medicine, and handicrafts. Although allergies to coconut are rare, they can cause cross-reactivity with other foods, such as macadamia, almonds, and hazelnuts. Coconuts are not classified as tree nuts but instead as fruits. The major allergen associated with coconut is Coc n 1, which is an inhalent allergen. Coconut can also cause contact dermatitis rashes due to Cocamide DEA, a fatty acid found in many cosmetic products.

When should I order a Coconut Allergy IgE Blood Test?

Individuals may order this test if they have experienced symptoms related to a coconut allergy. Allergy symptoms vary from one individual to the next, ranging from mild to severe reactions, occurring within minutes to a few hours after exposure. Common symptoms of a coconut allergy may include one or more of the following:

  • Hives or rash
  • Itching
  • Headache
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
  • Tingling sensation in the mouth
  • Trouble breathing

In some cases, a severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:

  •  Rapid or increased pulse
  • Swollen throat or lump, making it difficult to breathe
  • Low blood pressure
  • Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
