This Cotton Fiber Allergy test measures the IgE antibody levels in a blood sample to detect an allergy to cotton fibers. Cotton is a natural fiber produced from the cotton plant. These fibers help to make various textile products like underwear, socks, bedsheets, and t-shirts. In addition, cotton is used to create products like bandages, swabs, fishnets, and coffee filters.

People with a cotton fiber allergy often work in the textile industry, where they come in contact with raw cotton. These individuals inhale the cotton fibers as the cotton plants are processed. The cotton fibers may enter the lungs and cause an extreme reaction in the immune system. Since the body views certain substances as harmful, it will produce IgE antibodies to combat these invaders. Unfortunately, these antibodies cause histamine to be released, which causes an allergic reaction.

As a result, these individuals may experience mild or moderate allergic reaction and asthma-like symptoms, such as:

  • Chest tightness
  • Congestion
  • Cough
  • Itching
  • Running nose
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Wheezing

An extreme, life-threatening allergic reaction known as an anaphylactic shock can occur in the most severe cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs of an anaphylactic shock include:

  • Rapid or increased pulse
  • Swollen throat or lump making it difficult to breathe
  • Low blood pressure
  • Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
