The glucose urine test, quantitative, 24-hour measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in a 24-hour urine sample.

Order a glucose urine test, quantitative to measure the amount of sugar (glucose) in a urine sample taken over a 24 hour period. Glucose is a type of sugar that the body converts from carbohydrates an individual consumes. It is the principal source of energy for the body. A hormone called insulin helps transfer glucose into your cells from your bloodstream. If too much glucose gets into the blood, the excess is expelled through the urine.

Elevated amounts of glucose in the body can be a sign of a health problem. The most common cause of high glucose levels is diabetes. Diabetes is a class of diseases affecting the way the body handles glucose. However, in individuals with diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin, or the insulin produced does not function properly. In these instances, glucose builds up in the blood.

Symptoms vary from one individual to the next and may include one or more of the following:

  • Excessive hunger or thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Frequent urination
  • Dry mouth
  • Prolonged healing of cuts or sores

In some cases, a high level of glucose in the urine can be due to pregnancy. Women who are pregnant tend to have higher urine glucose levels than women who are not pregnant.

Elevated urine glucose levels can also be the result of renal glycosuria. Renal glycosuria is a rare disorder in which glucose is released into the urine by the kidneys.  Even if blood glucose levels are normal, renal glycosuria may cause urinary glucose levels to be high.
