This test is used to help evaluate a person with a condition associated with inflammation such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or even infection. Interleukin acts as both a pro-inflammatory cytokine and an anti-inflammatory myokine. IL-6 can be elevated with inflammation, infection, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and some leukemias.
