Order this Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) test to measure concentration levels in the blood to assess tumor progression and monitor response to cancer treatment. VEGF is a substance that stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis. In addition, VEGF is also involved in cancer progression. Cancerous tumors need an ample supply of oxygen-rich blood to continue to grow and spread; therefore, cancer stimulates new blood vessels to form to supply the blood.

Most tumors contain high concentration levels of VEGF. If left untreated, VEGF increases the progression of cancer spreading to other parts of the body. Unregulated high levels of VEGF can also increase the probability of blood vessel leakiness. These leaky blood vessels can lead to swelling in the areas surrounding tumors. This swelling is especially harmful during brain cancer as it causes increased pressure within the skull, leading to brain damage. Therefore, several cancer treatments target VEGF.

Individuals or healthcare providers may order this test to monitor tumor progression and how well cancer treatments are working.
