Patients with signs and symptoms consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are evaluated using the Anti-dsDNA (Double-stranded) Antibodies Blood Test.

Potential lupus symptoms include:

  • persistent fatigue or weakness
  • hair and weight loss
  • joint pain
  • skin sensitivity to light
  • skin rash resembling a butterfly across the nose and cheeks
  • tingling or numbness of the feet or hands
  • Inflammation and damage to organs and tissues, such as kidneys, lungs, heart, the lining of the heart, central nervous system, and blood vessels

Lupus is strongly associated with high levels of anti-dsDNA. During or just before a flare-up, levels are often significantly increased. If the anti-dsDNA is positive and the person being tested has other clinical signs and symptoms associated with lupus, the person being tested will probably have lupus.

Other autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren syndrome and mixed tissue disease (MCTD) may show low to moderate levels.
