Exposure to cadmium happens mostly in the workplace where cadmium products are made. The general population is exposed from breathing cigarette smoke or eating cadmium contaminated foods.

Cadmium poisoning through industrial exposure to inorganic cadmium fumes may produce fatigue, coughing, chest pain, a burning sensation in the throat, and renal damage.

Toxicity from inhaling fumes might cause pulmonary edema, lung inflammation. Chronic exposure might cause early hypertension, atherosclerosis and kidney disease.

Cadmium and cadmium compounds can cause lung cancer and have been associated with kidney and prostate cancer.
