Biomarker: F008-IgE Maize/Corn

Overview

F008-IgE Maize/Corn measures immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in serum that recognize maize, also called corn. IgE is involved in immediate-type allergic reactions, including symptoms affecting the skin, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, or multiple organ systems. A detectable or elevated result indicates sensitization to maize but does not by itself establish clinical allergy or predict reaction severity. The test is clinically useful when interpreted with a compatible history of reactions after maize exposure and, when necessary, a medically supervised oral food challenge.

Clinical Use Cases

  • Support evaluation of suspected IgE-mediated maize or corn allergy.
  • Identify sensitization to maize in patients with compatible food-related symptoms.
  • Contribute to the assessment of reactions such as urticaria, angioedema, gastrointestinal symptoms, wheezing, or anaphylaxis after maize exposure.
  • Help evaluate possible occupational allergy involving maize flour, dust, or pollen when interpreted with exposure history.
  • Support, but not replace, skin-prick testing and medically supervised oral food challenge.
  • Assist research on maize allergens and IgE-mediated allergic responses.

Specimen Types

  • Venous blood serum.
  • Plasma may be accepted by some laboratory methods, depending on the assay protocol.
  • Skin-prick testing with maize extract or fresh maize is an alternative in vivo assessment of sensitization, but it is not a specimen used for a serum-specific IgE measurement.

Measurement Methods

  • Automated allergen-specific immunoassays, commonly fluorescent enzyme immunoassays.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.
  • Chemiluminescent immunoassays.
  • Radioallergosorbent testing, an older method.
  • Component-resolved testing for selected maize allergen molecules may be available in specialized clinical or research settings.
  • Skin-prick testing is a complementary method, not a measurement of serum F008-IgE.

Test Preparation and Influencing Factors

  • Fasting is generally not required for a serum-specific IgE test.
  • Antihistamines generally do not interfere with serum-specific IgE testing, although they can affect skin-prick test results. Medication changes should be discussed with the ordering clinician.
  • Testing should be guided by a focused history of suspected maize exposure and symptoms. Broad food-allergen panels can produce clinically irrelevant positive results.
  • A positive result indicates IgE sensitization and may occur without symptoms after eating maize.
  • The concentration of maize-specific IgE does not reliably predict reaction severity.
  • Cross-sensitization to related foods or pollens may contribute to a positive result and requires clinical interpretation.
  • Results can vary according to the maize extract, assay platform, reporting units, and laboratory cutoff.
  • Total IgE, eczema, smoking, parasitic infection, and other allergic conditions may influence overall IgE concentrations but do not establish maize allergy.
  • A medically supervised oral food challenge remains the reference method when the diagnosis is uncertain.
