The Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) blood test helps diagnose parathyroid disease and other diseases of calcium homeostasis. A PTH test can also be use to assist with monitoring patients undergoing renal dialysis.

The Parathyroid Hormone test is also known as a PTH blood test, PTH Intact and PTH Whole Molecule.  Tests for phosphorus and calcium levels in the blood are often conducted at the same time as a PTH blood test. Because this test is cost-friendly, convenient and confidential, it is a good alternative for patients without insurance or a doctor's order.

Walk-In Lab's PTH blood test measures the level of parathyroid hormone in the blood, which is used to help identify hyperparathyroidism and to find the cause of abnormal calcium levels. PTH controls phosphorus and calcium levels in the blood and is made by the parathyroid glands (four pea-sized glands found behind the thyroid gland). If a person's blood calcium level is too low, the parathyroid glands release more PTH, which causes the bones to release more calcium. In turn, increased calcium in the blood reduces the amount of calcium released by the kidneys into the urine. During this process, vitamin D also is changed into a more active form, which causes the intestines to absorb more calcium and phosphorus. When calcium levels become too high, the parathyroid glands release less PTH, and the entire process is reversed. Too low or high PTH levels can cause kidney and bone problems, as well as undesired changes in calcium and vitamin D levels.
