What is the purpose of this test?
This Pistachio Nut Allergy test measures the IgE antibody levels in a blood sample to detect a food allergy to pistachios. Pistachios are tree nuts from the Pistacia tree native to Central and West Asia. Pistachios are a popular imported nut produced in Europe, Africa, America, and Australia. Pistachios contain several amounts of vitamin E, minerals (selenium, calcium, and magnesium), fiber, and antioxidants. They may also protect against heart disease; therefore, pistachios are an essential ingredient in products such as:
- Nut Butters
- Mixed nuts and trail mixes
- Nut milks
- Sauces
- Oils
- Vegetarian dishes
- Chocolates
- Flavored coffees
- Frozen desserts (ice cream)
- Baked goods (baklava and halvah)

What causes an allergic reaction to pistachios?
An allergy to tree nuts like pistachio nuts is widespread in the United States, making up 7% of nut allergy cases. Due to cross-reactivity, individuals with a pistachio allergy may also be sensitive to other tree nuts, including almonds, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, and cashews. Ingestion of pistachio nuts or their products may activate an individual's immune system response. The key allergens in pistachio nuts are the proteins called Pis v 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The body views these allergens as harmful and produces IgE antibodies to combat the invaders. Unfortunately, these antibodies cause the release of a chemical called histamine, triggering an allergic reaction.
When should I order a Pistachio Nut Allergy IgE Blood Test?
Individuals may order this test if they have experienced symptoms related to a pistachio nut allergy. An allergic reaction may range from mild or moderate to severe and vary for each individual. An individual may experience allergic reaction minutes to a few hours after exposure to an allergen. An individual allergic to pistachio nuts may experience the following symptoms:
- Tingling sensation in or around the mouth
- Swelling
- Abdominal pain
