Thyroxine Free Direct (T4) plus Thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH) Blood Test Panel includes:

  • T4 Free - is the active form of thyroxine and is a more accurate reflection of thyroid hormone function. The free T4 test is thought by many to be a more accurate reflection of thyroid hormone function, and, in most cases, its use has replaced that of the total T4 test. A total T4 or free T4 test is primarily ordered in response to an abnormal TSH result. Sometimes healthcare providers will order the T4 test and a TSH to evaluate the adequacy of the thyroid hormone feedback system. These tests are usually ordered when a person has symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) - is used to diagnose a thyroid disorder in someone with symptoms, monitor thyroid replacement therapy in people with hypothyroidism, diagnose and monitor female infertility problems, help evaluate the function of the pituitary gland (occasionally), and screen adults for thyroid disorders, though expert opinions vary on the benefits of screening and at what age to begin.

What is a thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland in the neck, above the collarbone, shaped like a butterfly. The thyroid is one of the endocrine glands, which produce hormones. These thyroid hormones help regulate the rate of many activities in the body, such as how fast calories are burned and how fast the heart beats.

What is the purpose of this panel?

Order this Thyroxine Free Direct (T4) plus Thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH) Blood Test Panel to evaluate healthy thyroid hormone function and screen for thyroid disorders. Thyroid function is critical to metabolism and affects energy level, heart rate, weight control, and more. Standard thyroid tests check how well the thyroid works and help diagnose thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. In addition, this panel may also be used to monitor hormone levels for individuals taking thyroid supplements.
