Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by the Thyroid Gland which is used in the production of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Normally, levels of thyroglobulin are very low. Certain conditions such as Graves Disease, Hashimoto Thyroiditis and several types of Thyroid Cancer can cause Thyroglobulin levels to become elevated. Measuring Thyroglobulin can help aid in the diagnosis of these conditions as well as monitor treatment. However, people with autoimmune disorders may have Thyroglobulin Antibodies in their body which can interfere with a Thyroglobulin Test. For this reason, a Thyroglobulin Antibody test is performed first to help determine if the Thyroglobulin test will be accurate. If the Thyroglobulin Antibody is positive, Thyroglobulin results may be incorrectly low. In this case, a person's doctor may recommend additional testing.
