Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) Blood Test (Female Only)
Useful in checking a female's ability to produce eggs that can be fertilized for pregnancy.
Description
An AMH test is generally used to verify the ability of a woman to produce eggs that can be fertilized for pregnancy. Throughout her childbearing years, a woman's ovaries may produce thousands of eggs. As women grow older, the number decreases. AMH levels help to reveal how many egg cells a woman has left. This is referred to as ovarian reserve.
AMH tests might be useful for:
- Predicting the beginning of menopause, a time in the life of a woman when her menstrual cycles have ended, and she is no longer able to become pregnant. This typically starts when a woman is 50 years old or so.
- Find out what causes early menopause.
- Help to find the reason for lack of menstruation, amenorrhea.
- Help diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that is a common cause of female infertility.
