This test measures the IgE antibody levels in a blood sample to detect an allergy to olives. Olives are a fruit made by the olive tree, belonging to the Oleaceae family with origins in the Mediterranean. Several types of olives range in color and shape (Black olives, green olives, etc.). Olives are a popular fruit crop grown globally, with countries such as Spain, Italy, and Greece as primary olives and olive oil producers.

Olives are a great source of vitamins E, K, D, and A. Recent studies have shown that olives may improve heart health, alleviate inflammation, and reduce the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the body. Due to its many health benefits, olives are an essential ingredient in products, such as:

  • Alcoholic cocktails
  • Butters
  • Certain cosmetics and soaps
  • Hair products (hair oils, shampoo, conditioners)
  • Marinades, sauces, and dressings
  • Olive Oil
  • Olive Paste
  • Certain savory dishes

An olive allergy is uncommon; however, hypersensitive people who ingest olives or olive-based products may experience mild to moderate allergic symptoms. Individuals that live in areas where olive trees are prevalent may also experience seasonal allergies due to their pollen. In addition, olives or their tree pollen may activate an unnecessary response in an individual's immune system. The body views certain substances as harmful and produces IgE antibodies to combat invaders. Unfortunately, these antibodies cause histamine to be released, which causes an allergic reaction.

An allergic reaction may range from mild or moderate to severe and vary for each individual. An individual may experience allergic reaction minutes to a few hours after exposure to an allergen. An individual allergic to olives may experience the following symptoms:

  • Tingling sensation in or around the mouth
  • Swelling
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Itching, hives, or eczema
  • Congestion
  • Trouble breathing or wheezing
  • Lightheadedness

An extreme, life-threatening allergic reaction known as an anaphylactic shock can occur in the most severe cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs of an anaphylactic shock include:

  • Rapid or increased pulse
  • Swollen throat or lump making it difficult to breathe
  • Low blood pressure
  • Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
