Description
Potassium is an electrolyte that is necessary for muscle and nerve function. Generally, we receive most of the potassium that we require from food intake. The body will use what it needs then the kidneys will dispose of what is not used. If the levels are too low or too high, one could experience serious health concerns.
Low levels could be seen in conditions such as:
- Conn syndrome
- diabetes
- diarrhea and vomiting
- water pill intake
- acetaminophen overdose complication
High levels could be seen in conditions such as:
- dehydration
- consuming too much potassium such as excessive amounts of fruits or juices
- diabetes
- infection
- tissue injury
- kidney disease
- Addison disease
