Potassium Blood Test, RBC

This test is used to provide a measurement of Potassium Levels.  Potassium is an electrolyte important to body and muscle function.  Irregular Potassium Levels can be indicative of a number of conditions including kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and gastrointestinal problems.  Some medications such as those for high blood pressure can affect the body's ability to excrete Potassium at a normal rate resulting in levels that are too high or too low.  Irregular Potassium levels due to diet are possible but less common. 

The Potassium RBC test provides a measurement of intracellular Potassium levels which can indicate deficiency sooner than an ordinary blood test.  This test is typically ordered by people who are experiencing symptoms common to Potassium deficiency but show regular levels with a Potassium Blood test.  This test may also be ordered with a potassium blood test for a comprehensive analysis of Potassium levels in the body.
