An Ammonia plasma test gauges the amount of ammonia in the blood. Ammonia is commonly formed when intestinal bacteria breaks down proteins.  Once the ammonia is formed, it is converted into urea.  The urea is eliminated through the urine. In the case where ammonia levels in the blood are rising too quickly, it is essential to ensure that the liver is functioning correctly. Cirrhosis or extreme cases of hepatitis may be the culprits.

An Ammonia plasma test is often performed for one of the following reasons:

  • to verify if the liver is functioning properly
  • those receiving high-calorie IV nutrition supplements
  • to gauge the effectiveness of current treatments for severe liver diseases
  • to assess the extent of bodily damage or health implications related to acute liver failure

The Ammonia plasma test can help you uncover possible health concerns related to:

  • liver disease
  • cirrhosis
  • other genetic urea cycle disorders
