A B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) blood test measures the levels of the BNP hormone in your blood.  BNP along with another heart hormone, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), work together in the task of keeping veins and arteries dilated or widened.  This allows for easy passage of blood and prevents clots from forming.

The BNP test will detect an elevation in BNP which normally indicates heart failure.

Some common symptoms of heart failure include:

  • trouble breathing
  • nausea or having no appetite
  • feeling exhausted or weak for no apparent reason
  • coughing a lot, and producing pink or white phlegm
  • rapid weight gain without a change in diet or activity
  • abnormally high or irregular heart rate
  • inability to concentrate or remain alert

This test can also help rule out heart failure. Conditions other than heart failure that can cause higher than normal BNP levels include lung or kidney conditions or being obese.
