Order this VLDL Cholesterol Blood Test to help assess your risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). VLDL represents very low-density lipoprotein. Lipoproteins are molecules containing lipids (fat) and proteins that move cholesterol, triglycerides, and other lipids throughout the body. VLDL is a specific type of lipoprotein that includes the most significant trace of triglycerides.

VLDL can lead to a buildup of fatty deposits, called plaques, in the arteries, leading to clogged arteries and a condition known as atherosclerosis. This plaque buildup can increase an individual's risk of heart disease, stroke, and other conditions. Therefore, VLDL is often considered a "bad cholesterol."

This VLDL Cholesterol Blood test estimates the VLDL cholesterol levels in your blood. Since there isn't a method to directly measure your VLDL levels, the test measures triglycerides to gauge the level of VLDL cholesterol.

Individuals should note that certain risk factors may increase your need for VLDL screening; these risks include:

  • Advancing age
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity and overweight
  • Family history of heart disease

Individuals may order this test to check VLDL cholesterol levels as part of early detection of potential cardiovascular problems, help their doctor suggest appropriate lifestyle changes or treatment, or monitor their condition in response to treatment.
