Biomarker: W010-IgE Lamb's Quarters

Overview

W010-IgE Lamb’s Quarters measures serum-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies directed against lamb’s quarters pollen, commonly identified as Chenopodium album or goosefoot pollen. IgE is involved in immediate hypersensitivity reactions and may contribute to allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma after pollen exposure. A detectable or elevated result indicates sensitization and may support lamb’s quarters pollen allergy when consistent with the patient’s symptoms and exposure history, but it does not by itself confirm clinical allergy or predict reaction severity. The test is clinically useful for identifying a potential pollen trigger, particularly when skin testing is unsuitable or when evaluating seasonal respiratory symptoms.

Clinical Use Cases

  • Supporting evaluation of seasonal allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, or asthma associated with weed-pollen exposure.
  • Identifying lamb’s quarters pollen as a possible allergen in patients with compatible symptoms.
  • Complementing the clinical history and, when appropriate, skin-prick testing.
  • Guiding allergen avoidance and consideration of allergy management strategies.
  • Supporting research on Chenopodium album pollen allergens and IgE sensitization patterns.

Specimen Types

  • Venous blood.
  • Serum, usually separated from whole blood.

Measurement Methods

  • Fluorescence-based allergen-specific immunoassay, such as an ImmunoCAP-type assay.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
  • Immunoblotting or Western blotting, mainly in research and specialized component studies.
  • Results may be reported quantitatively in allergen-specific IgE units and/or by interpretive classes, depending on the assay.

Test Preparation and Influencing Factors

  • Fasting is generally not required for an allergy blood test.
  • Patients should report all medications and supplements to the ordering clinician. Antihistamines generally do not affect blood testing in the same way they may affect skin testing, but medication instructions should come from the clinician.
  • Results should be interpreted with the timing, intensity, and geographic pattern of pollen exposure.
  • A positive result indicates sensitization, which may occur without clinically important symptoms.
  • The concentration of specific IgE does not reliably predict the severity of a future allergic reaction.
  • Cross-reactivity with related plant-pollen allergens, including shared panallergens such as profilins and polcalcins, may influence test interpretation.
  • Total IgE elevation, smoking, parasitic infection, and other clinical factors may complicate interpretation of allergy blood tests.
