Have you ever asked yourself, "Do i have diabetes?" Find out fast with a Glucose Serum Test that measures your blood sugar level. This is the most direct single test to diagnose diabetes and to evaluate how one controls the disease.

Why It Is Used
The glucose serum test is most often used to screen for Types 1 and 2 diabetes.  Gestational diabetes refers to diabetes that comes on during pregnancy and can be screened with this test as well.  The test is also used in diabetes management.

How It Works
The glucose serum test is the simplest and most direct single test available to test for diabetes.  The test measures the amount of glucose in the fluid portion of the blood.  It is called a “serum” test due to this fluid portion of the blood.  There are multiple components to the bloodstream.  The bulk of what constitutes blood is actually just water.  Floating in the water are white and red blood cells and platelets, as well as proteins, electrolytes, and minerals.  The water that everything is moving through is called the blood serum.  When glucose is released into the bloodstream it dissolves in this serum.  Once the glucose is dissolved, the pancreas releases insulin to help move the glucose out of the blood and into cells that will store the glucose as energy.  The glucose serum test measures the amount of glucose that is dissolved in the serum.  In someone with diabetes the insulin would not remove the glucose from the blood and levels would remain high.

Results
Test results are interpreted by looking at the levels of glucose found in the blood.  Glucose is measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) and can fall into one of four categorizations that have different medical implications.  Normal results vary based on what test is being used.  The following results are representative numbers based on the glucose serum fasting test.

  • Below 70 mg/dL: blood glucose levels lower than 70 mg/dL after the fasting test indicate an abnormally low level of blood sugar and may be cause for a diagnosis hypoglycemia.
  • 70 mg/dL to 99 mg/dL: blood glucose levels that fall within this range after fasting for 10-12 hours are considered to be normal and healthy.
  • 100 mg/dL to126 mg/dL: after fasting blood glucose levels in this range indicate a possible diagnosis of pre-diabetes and a heightened risk of developing diabetes.
  • Above 126 mg/dL:  If a blood glucose level is above 126 on the glucose plasma test, then a diagnosis of diabetes will likely be made.
