What is the purpose of this test?

Order this Occult Blood, Fecal, Immunoassay Test (FOBT), which detects blood hidden in a stool sample to help screen for colorectal cancer. The FOBT test looks for blood in the stool that cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is used to check for cancer, precancerous conditions, or other medical problems and may be used for health screening or diagnosis.

Finding occult blood in your stool may indicate the presence of colorectal cancer, which affects the colon or rectum. The FOBT is a valuable tool for detecting precancerous or cancerous growths early. Using the FOBT correctly in cancer screening has been shown to reduce disease and mortality rates. If you are already experiencing symptoms, diagnosis involves testing to identify the underlying cause of your condition. In addition to cancer screening, the FOBT may also be used to diagnose conditions such as anemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

When should I order an Occult Blood, Fecal, Immunoassay Test?

Individuals may order this test if they have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Certain risk factors include:

  • A family history of colorectal cancer
  • Previously had colorectal polyps
  • A family history of, or having had ovarian cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease
