Biomarker: E201-IgE Canary Feathers

Overview

E201-IgE measures immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies directed against canary feather allergens from Serinus canarius. IgE is involved in immediate hypersensitivity reactions and may contribute to allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, urticaria, or other symptoms after exposure to canary feathers or feather dust. A high result indicates sensitization to the tested allergen, but it does not by itself confirm symptomatic allergy or predict reaction severity. A low or undetectable result makes sensitization less likely, although results should be interpreted with exposure history and clinical findings.

Clinical Use Cases

  • Support evaluation of suspected allergy to canary feathers in patients with compatible symptoms.
  • Help investigate bird-associated allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, or asthma.
  • Assess possible occupational or household sensitization in bird keepers and other people with regular bird exposure.
  • Identify sensitization when skin testing is unsuitable, contraindicated, or affected by medications.
  • Complement, but not replace, clinical history, physical examination, and other allergy testing.
  • Investigate possible cross-sensitization among bird feather or serum allergens. Human studies have identified IgE-binding components in canary feathers and reported cross-reactive patterns among bird species.

Specimen Types

  • Serum or venous blood sample.
  • Plasma may be accepted by some laboratory platforms, depending on the laboratory’s validated specimen requirements.

Measurement Methods

  • In vitro allergen-specific IgE immunoassay.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based methods.
  • Fluorescence enzyme immunoassay or other solid-phase immunoassays.
  • Historical radioallergosorbent testing (RAST) and related radioactive IgE-binding assays.
  • Immunoblotting and other research-based IgE-binding methods for characterizing feather allergen components.

Test Preparation and Influencing Factors

  • Fasting is generally not required for a specific IgE blood test.
  • Patients should report all medications, particularly antihistamines and other allergy treatments. Medication instructions depend on the testing method and should be provided by the ordering clinician.
  • Total IgE elevation, smoking, parasitic infection, and other conditions may affect interpretation of IgE results.
  • A positive result indicates sensitization and does not establish that exposure causes symptoms or indicate the severity of a future reaction.
  • Results should be interpreted in relation to the timing and intensity of canary exposure, symptoms, and other relevant test findings.
  • Assay calibration, allergen extract composition, reporting units, and reference categories may vary between laboratories.
  • There is no established requirement for timed collection based on daily or seasonal variation for this specific IgE measurement.
