Biomarker: E003-IgE Horse Dander

Overview

E003-IgE Horse Dander measures serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies that bind to horse-dander allergens. IgE is involved in immediate hypersensitivity reactions, including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, urticaria, and, rarely, anaphylaxis. A high result indicates sensitization to horse dander or a cross-reactive allergen, while a low or undetectable result makes sensitization less likely but does not completely exclude clinically relevant allergy. The result is clinically useful when interpreted with exposure history and symptoms, but it does not independently establish allergy or predict reaction severity.

Clinical Use Cases

  • Evaluating suspected horse-associated allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, or skin symptoms.
  • Supporting assessment of occupational or recreational exposure to horses.
  • Investigating allergic symptoms in patients who develop reactions around horse stables, riding facilities, horse owners, or horse-containing environments.
  • Identifying sensitization when skin-prick testing is contraindicated, unavailable, or affected by medications or skin disease.
  • Supporting allergen avoidance counseling and, when clinically appropriate, consideration of allergen immunotherapy.
  • Distinguishing sensitization to whole horse-dander extract from sensitization to individual horse allergens, such as Equ c 1, when component testing is available.
  • Conducting epidemiologic or clinical research on sensitization to horse allergens.

Specimen Types

  • Serum from venous blood.
  • Serum from capillary blood in some testing protocols.

Measurement Methods

  • Fluorescence enzyme immunoassay.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
  • Chemiluminescent immunoassay.
  • Radioallergosorbent testing, or RAST, an older method.
  • Multiplex or singleplex molecular allergen-specific IgE immunoassays.
  • Skin-prick testing may be used as a complementary in vivo assessment, but it does not measure serum E003-IgE directly.

Test Preparation and Influencing Factors

  • Fasting is generally not required for an allergy blood test.
  • Antihistamines usually do not interfere with serum-specific IgE measurement, although medication instructions should be confirmed with the ordering clinician.
  • Patients should report all medications, supplements, allergic conditions, and recent reactions to their health care provider.
  • Results may be affected by assay platform, allergen-extract composition, reporting units, and laboratory-specific reference ranges.
  • Total IgE concentration, age, atopic dermatitis, and other allergic or inflammatory conditions may affect interpretation.
  • A positive result indicates sensitization and does not by itself confirm symptomatic allergy.
  • The magnitude of specific IgE does not reliably predict the severity of a future reaction.
  • A negative result does not completely exclude allergy, particularly when the clinical history strongly suggests reactions to horse exposure.
  • Interpretation should consider the timing, intensity, and reproducibility of symptoms in relation to horse exposure.
  • Blood collection typically uses a standard venipuncture sample; specialized preparation is generally unnecessary.
