Ionized calcium results will reveal more information about the active or in other words ionized calcium. This test may be an excellent resource if you have abnormal levels of proteins, for example, immunoglobins or albumin in your blood. Normally there is a balance between bound calcium and free calcium.  If it is not in balance, it is essential to find out why.  Usually, half of your body's total calcium is made up of free calcium and bound calcium. An imbalance can be a sign of a significant health issue.

Ionized calcium levels are generally checked if:

  • have abnormal levels of blood proteins
  • receiving blood transfusions
  • having major surgery
  • critically ill and on intravenous (IV) fluids

In the situations listed above, it is important to know exactly how much free calcium available in your blood.

Low levels of free calcium can cause:

  • your heart rate to slow down or speed up
  • cause muscle spasms
  • and even result in a coma

Symptoms of low free calcium levels include:

  • numbness around your mouth
  • numbness in your hands and feet
  • muscle spasms in the same areas
